The first theater in the Dongmen (東門) area of Da’an District, opened in 1951 as Dongbao Theater (東寶戲院) and was renamed Baogong the following year. Established by local gentry Liao Shuixing (廖水星), whose brother Liao Qinfu (廖欽福) later founded the Howard Hotels (福華飯店) chain. It operated as a first-run theater for nearly five decades before closing in 1998. The site, originally diagonally opposite Taipei Prison, was later redeveloped into a residential tower.
