Established in 1903 as Tarimu Station (他里霧驛), named after the Plains Indigenous settlement that predates modern Dounan. The present building dates to 1945, making it the last station built by the Japanese colonial administration before the end of the war. Among its notable surviving features are an air raid bell on the platform, the longest wooden waiting bench on the TRA network, and a hōanko (奉安庫) in the stationmaster’s office, a metal safe that once held portraits of the Japanese emperor and empress.
