Chiayi Zhongfu Paper Mill

A paper mill founded in 1943 alongside the sprawling brickworks that gave Zhuanyao (磚磘) its name, renamed Zhongfu after the Japanese colonial era ended. Its demand for rice straw drew ox cart drivers from the coastal townships of Chiayi and Yunlin, who settled beside the works in a hamlet known as Niucheliaozai (牛車寮仔). Another post-war mill, China Paper (中國紙廠), operated nearby; little survives of either, though Zhongfu Night Market (中福夜市) carried the name until it was rebranded Carrefour Tourist Night Market (嘉樂福觀光夜市).
