The site of the Carrefour Chiayi Store (家樂福嘉義店) was formerly a wood treatment plant operated by lumber tycoon Sun Hai (孫海). This plant opened in 1954 and specialized in treating hardwood, particularly for telephone poles exported to South Korea and Australia. Although the factory is long gone the logo of the company is still emblazoned on a gate at the back of the complex, near where people enter the night market.
