The Chiayi branch office of the Monopoly Bureau, designed by Umezawa Sutejirō (梅澤捨次郎) and built across from the bureau’s distillery in Chiayi City. Construction began in 1936 and finished the following year, but wartime conditions delayed the opening of the three-storey reinforced concrete building until March 1938. During the 228 Incident its doors and windows were altered so that it could serve as an artillery strongpoint. It was designated a city monument in 2000 and reopened in November 2020 as Chiayi Art Museum (嘉義市立美術館).
