Completed in 1954 after years of post-war fiscal difficulty, the former Chiayi City Office (舊嘉義市公所) served as the seat of local government for over four decades. When Chiayi was elevated to a provincial city in 1982 the building was expanded from two storeys to three; it remained in use until 1998, when the city government relocated to a new building on Zhongshan Road. Registered as a historical building (歷史建築) by the Chiayi City Government in 2016 for its architectural craftsmanship and significance to local civic memory, the former office is currently under renovation.
