Completed in 1954 after years of post-war fiscal difficulty, the former city office of Chiayi City served as the seat of local government for over four decades. Before then the office had worked out of the library of Chiayi Public Hall. When Chiayi was elevated to a provincial city in 1982 the building was expanded from two storeys to three. It remained in use until 1998, when the city government relocated to a new building on Zhongshan Road. A plan to sell the property in 2015 prompted a preservation campaign, and it was registered as a historic building the following year. The former office is currently under renovation.
