Built as Chiayi Telephone Exchange (嘉義電話交換室) to bring automatic switching to Chiayi City during the Japanese colonial era. It was completed in September 1939 together with Chiayi Post Office around the corner, both designed by Suzuoki Ryoichi (鈴置良一). The U-shaped reinforced concrete building, faced in brown glazed tile, still houses a Chunghwa Telecom service center and was registered as a historic building in 2004.
