Liuchongxi Kuva

A Taivoan (大武壠族) kuva (公廨) at Liuchongxi (六重溪) in Baihe, Tainan, serving a community that relocated from Yujing in the mid-18th century and was joined by others displaced in the aftermath of the Tapani Incident of 1915. There are two shrines here, both built in the thatched two-room form specific to Taivoan traditions: a small one for Qingshui Laojun (清水老君), and a larger ancestral house where five vessels on a stone altar stand for Taizu (太祖). Offerings are made of rice wine and betel nut rather than incense, and the central post (向柱) at the heart of the shrine, once hung with boar skulls, represents the spirit soldiers of Taizu. The annual Night Ceremony (夜祭) held on the fourteenth and fifteenth of the ninth lunar month lapsed for more than fifty years before its revival in 1998, when researchers and residents recovered three of the six ritual songs and this kuva was rebuilt as a ceremonial space within Liuchongxi Plains Indigenous Cultural Park (六重溪平埔文化園區).
