Founded around 1701 by Master Canche (參徹禪師), this Linji Chan temple in the hills of Guanziling (關仔嶺) above Baihe is the oldest of two great Buddhist temples in the area, the other being Biyun Temple (碧雲寺), which was established in 1808. The main hall was rebuilt between 1916 and 1925 under master carpenter Chen Yingbin (陳應彬) in a striking hybrid of Minnan temple design and Japanese carpentry modelled on Tōdai-ji (東大寺) in Nara. Severely damaged in the 1964 Baihe earthquake and progressively restored since.
