One of the Four Great Temples of Tamsui (淡水四大廟), this Mazu temple was completed in 1796 with donations from Minnan and Hakka settlers alike, as river trade shifted from Bali on the south bank to the north. The temple also kept the Wanggaolou (望高樓), an oil-lit stone beacon that guided ships into the harbour until its was requisitioned during World War 2. It retains an antique appearance as it has only been lightly renovated over the last half century.
