The first Western medical clinic in northern Taiwan, founded by Canadian Presbyterian missionary George Leslie Mackay in Hobe (滬尾), the historic name of Tamsui. Mackay designed the present building himself and local mason Hong Quan (洪泉) completed it in 1879 as a Minnan-style house with Western arched windows, an operating room, and examination rooms. In the 1884 Battle of Tamsui (滬尾之役), part of the Sino-French War, wounded Qing soldiers were treated here. The practice moved to Taipei in 1912 as Mackay Memorial Hospital; the building, designated a monument in 1998, now operates as a café and exhibition space next to Tamsui Presbyterian Church.
