Bālǐ (八里) sits at the mouth of the Tamsui River in northwestern New Taipei, connected by ferry to Tamsui on the opposite bank. The district is associated with Liao Tianding (廖添丁), a bandit-turned-folk-hero who evaded Japanese colonial authorities before meeting his end here in 1909. The Liao Tianding Temple marks his grave and deeper into the southern hills you can find the cave where he allegedly made his last stand. It is also home to a famous ruin, the derelict Formosa Fun Coast water park, which has stood abandoned since the 2015 color party explosion that killed 15 and injured hundreds more.
