Established in the Japanese colonial era as Tansui-zu (淡水座) or Tansui-gekijō (淡水劇場), this was the first theater on the northern coast of Taiwan. It was mainly a venue for traditional opera and performance in the early years, although it also served as a hospital in the tumultuous years of the war. Amazingly, it remained in business until 1992, when it was destroyed by a fire.
