Fort Provintia was established by the Dutch in 1653 but surrendered to the pirate-king Koxinga in 1662. The fort fell into ruin during the Qing dynasty era but several temples were constructed on the site over the centuries since then. Parts of the original fort walls can now be seen in Chihkan Culture Park (赤崁文化園區) along with numerous other historic relics such as the gatehouse to Penghu Academy (蓬壺書院). There is a modest admission fee to enter the park.
