Hidden in the alleyways of North District, Tainan City, is this old temple founded in 1750 to venerate the pirate-king Koxinga, originally in secret. After the Qing conquest in 1684, locals disguised his worship by renaming him Zhu Wangye (朱王爺), using his imperial surname. The temple claims the title “Sacred Ground of Taiwan’s Founding” (開台聖地), as Koxinga’s troops reportedly landed nearby and camped on this site while besieging Fort Provintia (赤崁樓), forcing the Dutch surrender.
