Although Taichung Park was established in the Japanese colonial era the main gate fronting onto the intersection of Ziyou Road (自由路) and Gongyuan Road (公園路) was only built in 1957. It is one of several remaining works by Taichung artist Wang Shui-ho (王水河) and aroused considerable controversy not long after it was completed. Originally one of the gateposts was topped by an abstract sculpture of a female nude inspired by Western art. Provincial official Zhou Xiangxian (周象賢) and several councilors objected to the design as contrary to “Chinese propriety”, and the sculpture was soon removed. The gate still stands today, albeit with modifications to the original design over the years.
