Yīnggē (鶯歌) is a district in far west New Taipei on the border with Taoyuan. Settlers from China established pottery workshops here around 1805, drawn by the clay deposits of nearby Jiānshān (尖山) and abundant coal and timber for firing kilns. During the Japanese colonial era kilns with tall brick chimneys were commonplace, but modernization over the 1970s reduced their number to a token amount. The old street (鶯歌陶瓷老街) along Jianshanpu Road is now a major tourist destination for ceramics shopping and DIY workshops.
