Sānzhī (三芝) is a rural district on New Taipei’s northwestern coast between Tamsui and Shimen. The district is best known as the birthplace of Lee Teng-hui (李登輝, 1923—2020), Taiwan’s first democratically elected president, and for the eponymous UFO Houses, a formerly abandoned resort development of futuristic pod-shaped vacation homes demolished in the late 2000s.
