Sānchóng (三重) is a densely urbanized district across the Tamsui River from Taipei. In the post-war era industrialization transformed Sanchong into a manufacturing hub. Under the 1969 “living room as factory” (客廳即工廠) policy small workshops proliferated through residential alleys, producing screws, molds, electroplating, and plastic injection parts, powering Taiwan’s export economy. The district was also the center of Taiwan’s vinyl record industry; from the 1960s through the 1980s, an estimated 90% of the island’s records were pressed in Sanchong. The Air Force Military Village No. 1, built on a former World War 2 Japanese anti-aircraft position and now preserved as a military village heritage site, reflects the district’s post-war demographic shifts as mainland refugees settled alongside industrial workers.
