Completed in 1934 on Guizaishan (鬼仔山), beyond the old walled city of Magong, to replace the decaying Qing dynasty garrison headquarters (總鎮署) that had served as the colonial seat of government since 1895. The two-storey concrete building is in the imperial crown style (帝冠樣式), with a basalt base, a Japanese tiled roof, and a central tower. It has housed the Penghu County Government since 1946, with the former prefecture chief’s residence next door. Penghu was one of three late colonial prefectures organized as a chō (廳) rather than a shū (州), both rendered as prefecture in English, and this is the only chō office still standing.
