Jingliao Yichang Rice Mill (後菁寮義昌碾米廠) - Spectral Codex
後菁寮義昌碾米廠

A wooden rice mill just northeast of Jingliao Old Street in Houbi. Its precise date of construction went unrecorded, though it appears in a Government-General factory directory. The Liang family bought the business in 1948 and carried the name forward. A shopfront, milling floor, and family residence sit under a single gable roof of pan-and-cover tiles, with a raised roof vent (太子樓) lighting the machinery below, with walls combining a fir frame with wattle-and-daub. Cheap household milling machines and rural depopulation closed the mill around 1991, but it was registered as a historic building in 2010 and restored in 2020. It has since reopened as a small café where the third generation of the family gives tours and keeps the machinery running.
