Jingliao Jindexing Apothecary (菁寮金德興藥舖) - Spectral Codex
Jingliao Jindexing Apothecary (菁寮金德興藥舖)

A three-bay timber shophouse on Jingliao Old Street, said to have been built for a Lin family in Lucao, Chiayi, in the 18th century, then dismantled and re-erected on this site in 1910. It was bought soon after by Ruan Qian (阮謙), a practitioner of Chinese medicine whose family had settled in Jingliao in 1875, and it still carries his shop name Jindexing Qianji (金德興謙記) on a plaque of 1925. A raised-beam frame (抬樑式) leaves the interior unusually open beneath a U-shaped attic; earthquakes in 1941, 1964, and 2010 cost the building its swallowtail ridge and several of its wattle-and-daub walls, and it remains a private residence closed to visitors despite designation as a monument in 2005.
