Built in 1840 by Chen Chaopin (陳朝聘) and his son Chen Zhonglian (陳仲璉) in the village of Linwei (林尾), this traditional Minnan-style courtyard house represents the oldest surviving structure in Jiji. Constructed entirely from nanmu (楠木) imported from Yunnan, the residence demonstrates the prosperity of the Chen family, who made their fortune trading rice and sugar with mainland China. The building’s robust construction allowed it to survive the devastating 921 Earthquake largely intact, serving as a testament to traditional architectural techniques. It was registered as a heritage property in 2004.
