Established in 1996 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Huoshaozhuang (火燒庄戰役), the culmination of the Japanese invasion of Taiwan. On November 26, 1895, during the Yiwei War (乙未戰爭), around 200–300 Hakka militia of the Liudui (六堆) militias made their last stand here. Led by Qiu Fengyang (邱鳳揚), the militia fought valiantly but were overwhelmed; the Japanese burned the village, killing around 250 people. The memorial was initiated by descendants of the Hakka gentry and stands on the original battlefield site.
