A statue in Shitan Riverside Park (獅潭河濱公園), just behind Shitan Yimin Temple (獅潭義民廟), honoring Huang Nanqiu (黃南球), a Qing dynasty pioneer credited with opening up much of the interior of Miaoli to Han Chinese settlement through force and coercion. He also led troops in the Yiwei War (乙未戰爭), resisting the Japanese invasion of Taiwan in 1895, but fled to China for several years before returning as a businessman and entrepreneur. Digging deeper, one will find that he was ruthless in his approach to the local population of Taiwanese Indigenous people.
