Established in 1915 as the Pingtung Loyal Spirit Monument (屏東忠魂碑), this was originally a monument to Japanese who perished in confrontations with Taiwanese Indigenous people in Pingtung county. After the war it was repurposed as a Retrocession Monument (光復紀念碑).
