The grave of Hú Zōngnán (胡宗南, 1896–1962), a four-star general and one of Chiang Kai-shek’s most trusted Whampoa Military Academy graduates. He was known as the “King of the Northwest” (西北王) for commanding some 400,000 troops in Shaanxi. After retreating to Taiwan he commanded guerrilla forces on the Dachen Islands under an assumed name before serving as Penghu defense commander, retiring in 1959 and dying of illness three years later. He was buried here on Yangmingshan in June 1962, on a hillside overlooking Yangming Shuwu (陽明書屋).
