Japanese Immigrant Villages in Taiwan

During the Japanese colonial era both the government and private enterprise established planned settlements in some areas of Taiwan for various reasons, primarily economic. These settlements were typically segregated from the rest of Taiwanese society, and the government (or company) constructed facilities and provided incentives to encourage immigration. After World War 2 these villages were depopulated and soon reoccupied during the housing crisis that followed the KMT’s retreat to Taiwan in 1949.
