Tobacco barns scattered across the former Hayashida Immigrant Village (林田移民村) in Fenglin, where the Hakka farmers who took over the settlement after the Japanese departure turned to tobacco around the 1950s. Household wealth was once counted in barns; the tall Osaka-style curing houses, capped by a “prince tower” (太子樓) vent above the ridge, proved vulnerable to typhoons, and only around ten now survive. A few have been restored or integrated into private homes, while others stand in ruins.
