Completed in 1917 by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), this was the largest hospital in the colony at the time. It was heavily damaged during US bombing runs in World War 2. In the post-war period it was taken over by the ROC army and continued to operate as a military hospital until 1987. In 2000 the now-derelict building was turned over to National Cheng Kung University and it was declared a heritage site in 2003.
