One of two major military bases in Japanese colonial era Taiwan, established in 1907 when the No. 2 Infantry Regiment moved to Tainan. The barracks were designed by the Imperial Japanese Army Engineering Department and constructed in two phases, with the second phase (from 1910) being the most ornate. Before 1927, this was the southernmost army base in the Japanese Empire, frequently visited by royalty, including Crown Prince Hirohito during his 1923 tour of Taiwan (臺灣行啟). After the war the site was taken over by the ROC Army, and in 1966 it became the Guangfu Campus of National Cheng Kung University (成功大學光復校區). Five original barracks buildings survive and were designated as national monuments in 2003.
