Established in 1915 by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), this building was originally an officers’ club for the Japanese army stationed in Tainan. In the post-war period it was appropriated for use as a residence. It was emptied in 2005 and slated for demolition but preservationists successfully lobbied for it to be listed as a heritage structure in 2007. It was finally restored in 2024 after a long period of dereliction. Much of its exterior is obscured by the surrounding buildings.
