South District (南區) is home to Nanshan Cemetery, established in 1642 and the most extensive Ming-Zheng and Qing dynasty cemetery in Taiwan with approximately 60,000 graves scattered across the grounds. The cemetery contains several tombs of exceptional historical significance, including the Ceng Chenyang Tomb, the oldest known Han Chinese tomb in Taiwan dating to 1642, and burial sites for members of Koxinga’s family such as the Lady Ceng and Lady Cai Tomb and the Sons of Koxinga Tomb. The district also preserves remnants of World War 2 era military infrastructure, including fortifications and observation posts associated with the former Tainan Airfield, as well as the Shuijiaoshe Cultural Zone, a well-preserved military village now operating as a heritage site. Additional notable locations include the Sikunshen Longshan Temple, established in 1665 on what was once a sandbar at the margins of Taijiang Lagoon (台江內海), and the Yancheng Salt Office, a Japanese colonial era administrative building associated with the region’s historic salt industry.
