Founded in 1908 as Nanjing Sugar Manufacturing Plant (南靖製糖所) under Tōyō Sugar Manufacturing Co. (東洋製糖株式會社), which also established its headquarters here. It began production in 1909 and was absorbed into Meiji Sugar Manufacturing Co. (明治製糖株式會社) in 1927. At its peak the factory drew on over 5,000 hectares of surrounding sugarcane fields and was connected by rail to the western trunk line via Nanjing Station. During the 228 Incident in 1947 a group of factory employees being escorted to Chiayi City were intercepted and killed by soldiers at Qizaiding (崎仔頂). Production ceased in 2008, making this the third last sugar factory operating in Taiwan. The warehouse complex was registered as a historic building in 2020.
