Hunei Sanhou Gun Emplacements

A pair of reinforced concrete gun emplacements abandoned in scrubland near Sanhou Elementary School (三侯國民小學) in northwestern Hunei, a short distance from Erren River (二仁溪) and some four kilometers south of Tainan Airfield. Some local historians identify these structures as dating back to World War 2, likening their stepped embrasures to the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall, but little about the pair is characteristic of Japanese coastal defenses elsewhere in Taiwan. Other comments describe them as post-war ROCAF artillery emplacements covering the southern approach to the airfield, armed with multi-barrel anti-aircraft machine guns and still listed in the airfield’s inventory. The post-war attribution is the more plausible of the two, though no documentary evidence has yet been located to settle the question.
