Hsinchu Zoo

Established in 1936 as part of a children’s amusement ground in Hsinchu Park (新竹公園), paid for by public subscription to mark five years of city status, this is the oldest zoo in Taiwan still in operation on its original site. The animals were sent to Taipei during the war and the zoo did not reopen until 1953. While most of the site has been redeveloped over the years, most recently between 2017 and 2019, the main gate with its elephant and lion figures is still the original dating back to the Japanese colonial era.
