Completed around 1925, during the Japanese colonial era, as the town office of Hsinchu, this two-storey red brick building became the city hall when the town was elevated to city status in 1930 and was enlarged that same year. After the war it briefly housed the new city government before passing to the county branch of the KMT and later a household registration office. More recently it was nicely restored and reopened as Hsinchu City Art Gallery (新竹市美術館).
