First glance at Sanyi Market in Shilin on a hazy day in March 2017.
Sanyi Market (三益市場) was a mixed-use development established in Shilin, Taipei, around 1973. Few records attest to its early history but it likely prospered for decades before falling into disrepair. By the mid-2000s it had become notorious for its dilapidated and semi-abandoned state, attracting the attention of Taiwan’s vibrant urban exploration scene. The market, which had initially operated out of the basement, had become filled with garbage and overgrown with weeds, while many of the units upstairs were abandoned or occupied by squatters.
Nowhere around the periphery was there a sign with the name of the market.
There is some confusion about the exact name of this old market building. Business records1 indicate Sanyi Market was the official name, but it also seems to have been known as Hualing Market (華齡市場). The address is given in some city records as Hualing Street Lane 2 No. 27 (華齡街2巷27號), but it is now located at Jiantan Road No. 57 (劍潭路57號), so perhaps the streets in this part of town were reorganized at some point.
The dilapidated state of the inner courtyard.
Many units had been sealed with metal sheeting.
Lush foliage exploding from the market level down below.
A hallway filled with rubbish behind one of the occupied units.
Down in the gloom of the former market.
An abandoned shrine in the darkness.
Likely a self-made addition to one of the units on the second level.
Towels drying next to an old-fashioned hair salon and esthetician.
A pair of chickens hanging out in the old market building.
A return visit to the site in 2021 revealed it had been demolished, leaving only a construction site.
This old market building was finally demolished around 2020, leaving only a construction site. A new tower started going up around 2023, and from what I gather this will likely be a residential building when completed.
