A tunnel about 50 meters long excavated around 1921 beneath the Yuandongzi (員崠仔) escarpment in Zhudong for the Shiba’er line (十八兒線) of the Zhudong Light Railway (竹東軌道), a pushcart line serving Shangping (上坪) and Wufeng. Frequent cave-ins and the needs of larger trucks led to the construction of the Nanqing Highway (南清公路) in the 1950s, after which the tunnel was abandoned and overgrown. It is poorly document but it appears as if one portal might remain in the long grass somewhere next to the modern highway.
