Wufeng

Wufeng (五峰), named after Wuzhi Mountain (五指山), is a remote mountain township in southern Hsinchu County and the traditional homeland of the Tayal and Saisiyat Indigenous peoples. The least populous township in the county, it borders Jianshi and shares the Syakaro Historic Trail (霞喀羅古道) with its neighbor. Most notably, the township was the site of Chinese general Zhang Xueliang’s house arrest from 1946 to 1957; his former residence, originally a Japanese police hot springs retreat, has since been reconstructed. Nearby is the Sanmao Dream House, a residence frequented by the famous author in her later years.
