Completed in 1932 by Japanese entrepreneur Eiji Shigeta (重田榮治), it was the first modern department store in Taiwan, and also featured the first public elevator. The exterior was renovated to feature glass curtains sometime in the 1970s, making the building appear not so old, but as of 2024 a full restoration effort is planned.
It is unclear whether or not the building was equipped with a rooftop Shinto shrine as with Hayashi (林百貨) in Tainan and Yoshii (吉井百貨) in Kaohsiung, the other two great department stores of the Japanese colonial era.
