Tàixī (臺西) is a coastal township in western Yunlin County historically known as Haikou (海口), literally “seaport”. It is mostly low-lying and flood-prone and has suffered several disasters over the centuries. Nowadays it is mainly known for its aquaculture industry. Notable remnants from its past include the restored Haikou Village Police Station from the Japanese colonial era and the abandoned Taixi Theater, the last remaining of several that once entertained local residents before the advent of home television.
