Established in 1956 by Lin Mingshuan (林明拴) in Haibei Village (海北村), Taixi, Yunlin, this was originally a zhaitang (齋堂), or fasting hall, where adherents gathered for rituals and ceremonies as well as the preparation of vegetarian meals. Although the faith is often lumped in with Buddhism the Zhaijiao (齋教) folk religion is more closely associated with Luoism (羅教), a syncretic family of Chinese salvationist faiths persecuted for much of its history in imperial China. The congregation decamped to a newer facility in neighbouring Xiding Village (溪頂村) leaving this one to the elements.
