Lúnbèi (崙背) is a township in northwestern Yunlin distinguished as the county’s only designated Hakka priority development area; roughly 40% of residents are descended from Zhao’an (詔安) Hakka settlers who maintain the Zhao’an dialect in the township’s eastern villages. Lunbei is also recognized as a birthplace of Taiwanese glove puppetry (布袋戲), with several renowned troupes originating here. Fengtian Temple, the township’s foremost Mazu temple, was established in 1797.
