Tuku

Tuku (土庫) is located in central Yunlin and is the least populous of the county’s five towns. The area was originally Hoanya Indigenous territory before Fujian settlers arrived during the Qing dynasty and established a market town. Under Japanese rule Tuku became an administrative center, and several colonial era buildings survive, including Tuku Village Office, completed in 1934 and since restored, and the derelict Mingxing Theater, a 1935 performance venue that operated into the early 1970s. Much of the old commercial street was damaged by fires and severe flooding in the 1950s and 1960s and subsequently rebuilt, giving the streetscape a distinctive layered character of post-war façades over older structures.
