Beipu (北埔) is a rural township in Hsinchu County with one of Taiwan’s highest concentrations of Hakka residents. Many of its historic sites relate to the Han settlement of the area, particularly the national monument Jinguangfu Mansion and the adjacent Tianshui Hall. It prospered from tea production in the Japanese colonial era and was more recently developed for rural tourism. Several of its Japanese colonial era sites are preserved including the Jiang Axin Mansion, a luxurious Western-style mansion built by a prominent tea merchant, and the Deng Nanguang Residence, which now serves as a photography museum.
