Xinfeng

Xinfeng (新豐) is a coastal township in northwestern Hsinchu County with the longest shoreline in the county. Originally called Hóngmáo (紅毛), literally “red hair” in reference to Dutch sailors said to have landed here in 1646, the township was renamed in 1956 as the old name was considered unrefined. The area has yielded Neolithic artifacts including rope-patterned pottery and stone tools. During the Japanese era, an airfield was established here at Hongmao Airfield (紅毛飛行場).
