Established as the Donggang Sugar Factory (東港製糖所) in 1920. It absorbed equipment from Hengchun Sugar Factory after it shut down in the 1950s and hence production capacity expanded. This sugar factory operated until 2003, pretty much when Taiwan acceded to the WTO, and was mostly dismantled around 2012. Remnants of the sugar factory have been turned into a tourist attraction, and there are several historic buildings on the former factory grounds.
