Founded in 1910 as Beigang Sugar Manufacturing Co. (北港製糖株式會社), the factory began operations in 1911 and was subsequently absorbed by Tōyō Sugar and then Dai-Nippon Sugar, becoming one of the largest facilities in the latter’s network. Severely damaged by American air raids in 1945, it was rebuilt under Taiwan Sugar Corporation and continued production until 2005. The sprawling complex of 24 warehouses, the crushing plant with its chimney and rail lines, and a steam locomotive shed were registered as historic buildings in 2016. The site is currently being redeveloped in phases as a cultural and creative industries park.
