Former Dazhou Suspension Bridge

Remains of a Japanese colonial era suspension bridge can be found on the bed of Heping River (和平溪), formerly Dazhuoshui River (大濁水溪), which marks the boundary between Yilan and Hualien. Completed in 1921 and rebuilt between 1927 and 1928, the bridge was about 520 meters long and 3.6 meters wide, and from 1932 it carried buses along the coastal road that preceded the Suhua Highway, until a typhoon destroyed it in 1946. Additional remnants can be found on the north and south sides of the river, including a commemorative inscription carved into the cliff face on the north side that names the Japanese engineers who worked on the bridge.
